AWARDS JUROR

OTTO STÜRCKE

Awards Judge Stürcke is a nationally recognized artist. He has garnered recognition and several awards for his work including the title of Master Pastelist and the Art Spirit Foundation Dianne B. Bernhard Gold Medal Award by the Pastel Society of America, the Robert & Patricia Suggs Award by the Pastel Society of the West Coast, the “Best of 2012” by Art Los Angeles Magazine, and has also been chosen to be part of the American Latino Collective at the Smithsonian Museum.  His work has been published in the French publication “40 Maitres du Pastel” (40 Masters of Pastel) by Pratique des Arts Magazine, “The Art of Chalk” by Tracy Lee Stum, and as “Artist of Note” by Southwest Art Magazine.

The Drifter

Otto Stürcke was born in 1971 and grew up in Southern California.  Primarily self-taught, Stürcke joined the U.S. Marine Corps in hopes of attaining financial aid to attend an art college.  His plans were momentarily altered in 1991 when he was called to serve in Desert Storm.  Soon after his military service, Stürcke enrolled in art workshops and courses at several local art associations and colleges while launching his illustration career under the mentorship of Mike Butkus.  Working as an illustrator served Stürcke for honing many techniques and found pastels to be his principal medium of choice.

As a representational artist, Stürcke seeks to find common ground between the contemporary and the classical. Greatly influenced by the Dutch Masters, Stürcke aims to depict the personal, the emotional, and the quiet elegance in his paintings through light, shadow, and texture.

EXHIBITION JUROR

JOE MANCUSO

Joe’s hard work is often rewarded. In 2007 he was designated “Distinguished Pastelist” with The Pastel Society of the West Coast. In 2016 his painting, “The Tide and Tempest,” received “Best Of Show” in the “Rejoice In Art” juried exhibition. In 2017 his painting, “Morning Showers,” received “Best Of Show” in the Pastel Society Of Southern California Members exhibition. At the 2017 Carmel Plein Air Festival, a juried exhibition of 60 nationally recognized painters, Joe received The Artist’s Choice, People’s Choice and Best Pastel awards.

Joe’s continuing recognition as a top landscape painter keeps him in demand as an instructor. His classes, workshops and private lessons are continually sought after. Joe is a Signature member with the Pastel Society of America. He is a participating member of the California Art Club, Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters, The Pastel Society Of America, The Pastel Society Of Southern California and The Pastel Society Of The West Coast. Joe has exhibited in the Butler Institute Of American Art, St. Mary’s Academy Art Museum and The Haggin Museum. His paintings hang in private collections throughout North America and Europe.

Joe is greatly influenced by the changing of seasons and the weather and celebrates the moods each season brings. Known for the quality of light in his work he enjoys working on location to accurately see and capture the changing light. “Although I may be attracted to a certain place or scene, it is always my goal to move beyond a literal translation and say something extraordinary about light in my work. It is always the light.”
